Thinking of giving up the gargle for a while? Some time away from booze comes with a lifetime of benefits both mentally and physically. Take even just one month off can have long term lifechanging effects for a person. Here are only a few things you could get up to if your leaving your favourite tipple on the shelves.
Charlie Byrnes:
Charlie Byrnes is a bit of an institution in Galway but it always fills me with joy when I find that golden nugget of a book. Even better again are the helpful staff and cheap prices. I find in a lot of shops there is an air of pressure to buy. You will not find this air in Charlie Byrnes. Just a great experience of sampling hundreds if not thousands of titles.
Walk the Prom:
My zen time, whether you are from Galway or visiting you can always join in on the comradery of walking Galway’s promenade. Take in the scenic views and be present on your chosen day. Don’t forget to kick the wall and even make a donation to a good cause. This is Galway’s friendliest place for a stroll meeting young and old along the way.
Hike Diamond Hill:
A bit of a drive but if you are looking for breathtaking views and up for a hike Diamond Hill comes highly recommended. Diamond Hill is a two hour loop in Connemara overlooking Letterfrack. If you’re looking to get into hiking this is the perfect place to start and wet your taste buds. It’s suitable for all ages and fitness levels too!
Take a Dip:
If you are looking to up your health game this year why not try out taking a dip in Salthill or jump right in off Blackrock. Studies show serious benefits for both physical and mental health. There is also great comradery down at Blackrock where you won’t be the only one braving the cold.
Visit the Donkeys of Dangan:
Hailing from the Donkey Sanctuary in Cork it is hard but not fall in love with these animals. Every year Madden’s Florist takes in some donkeys from the sanctuary and the friendliness of these donkeys is not to be missed! Top tip, bring some carrots for brownie points!
